The Calibre Octa: A Horological Ideal The Calibre Octa by F.P.Journe represents an ideal in horology, aiming for the highest precision and autonomy in timekeeping. Unlike constant-force or resonance models, the Octa focuses on extending the running duration of wristwatches. Historically, church clocks ran for a month due to their large driving weights. In wristwatches, the mainspring size is limited, so watchmakers added an extra wheel to the gear train to extend duration. However, this often resulted in low energy reaching the balance, leading to unstable precision. F.P.Journe tackled this by increasing the spring’s capacity while maintaining stability. The spring, measuring 1 meter and 1 millimeter thick, allows for extremely fast automatic winding, achieving over five days of running time with just one and a half hours of winding on a Chappuis Cyclotest. This innovation ensures consistent energy delivery and precise timekeeping, embodying the horological ideal of the Calibre Octa.
